The Kitchen

I love kitchens.  I love the way they look, the smells that come from them, the dishes and memories you create in them.   I get excited when I see an old Aga stove, an apron sink, soapstone countertops.   The kitchen is the one room above all others, where form should follow function.

We live in our kitchen, and for as much time as we spend in it, it needs some major design changes.  Right now, it's one long, dark room.  Our cabinets are slightly warped and hung a little crooked, we have a plastic folding table serving as an island, and the lack of storage means I have several small appliances scattered in corners or shelves in other rooms.  Not the best situation.

My ideal kitchen is bright and warm.  There is a large farmhouse table on one side, a table that had families gathered around it generations ago.  The floors are soft pine, and against one wall a fire would be going in a brick fireplace.  I'd have an Aga stove, a walk-in pantry, and enough counter space to have a designated place for prepping vegetables, working with meats, and rolling pastry.  There would be a chair near the fireplace, and a bookshelf filled with cookbooks, craft books, and novels.  It would be obvious that it was a room where people lived and worked, with just the right amount of useful clutter.

We will be redoing our kitchen sometime this year.  I'm fine that it won't be the kitchen of my dreams, so long that it's the right kitchen for this house.

  2. To me a kitchen is a place that family and friends gather around tell stories and cook and "sample" the foods that you love.

I like your ideal kitchen that you described..:))

    1. It's true, a great kitchen is also about the people who gather in it. I've had some of the best times in tiny apartment kitchens.

  3. Your dream kitchen sounds wonderful. I especially love the chair next to the fireplace. Kitchens are fantastic places to hang out. Lots of discussions and laughter galore. Hope you get your dream kitchen! :)

  4. I love the images you've created in my mind of your kitchen! My kitchen has room on the counters for family and friends sitting and talking while I work. Chairs are allowed when I am able to pull up one with them as well!

I think we do most of our problem solving in my family in the kitchen!
    Hugs~

  5. Your dream kitchen sounds wonderful. I am very happy with the kitchen I have now. I've lived with cramped space and am finally able to keep all my appliances and gadgets in the kitchen, not in an upstairs closet! Good luck with your re-model.

  7. Ah, the kitchen :) Ours is small and open, but perfectly functional for the amount of time we spend in it. There's a bar separating it from the dining/living area, so whenever we have company I can cook and keep up with the conversation--that's a plus for me :) Great post, Janna!

  8. Do you kitchen dream on pinterest too? Your ideal kitchen sounds warm and loving ... And creative. I like to think if you live in a house long enough, your family will develop your style. Maybe you will be in this home for years to do that.

    1. Pintrest is a place I do a lot of kitchen dreaming! I'm trying to pace myself with our redesign, but the lack of function is what's really driving me crazy.

  9. I keep saying our next home will have a custom kitchen and a reading nook. I envision white panelled walls, picture windows, stone flooring, granite counters, brushed nickle appliances and cherry cabinets. I want counters that I don't have to lean over to use. A single basin sink. Loads of space and a walk-in pantry. I am not asking for much...

  10. i've always wanted one big enough for an island and one that kind of spilled out into the living space, so when someone is cooking they can still communicate with the other people in the house...open, that's what i want, that cat basket up there is pretty cute too! :P
